Fantastic hotel at great location”

Newly converted hotel in historic district, great service, great food

Banana Boutique is a great location along Lebuh Chulia near to Jalan Penang. Hence it is near to the major bus routes and you can hop on to the buses to go anywhere in Penang. Banana Boutique is a newly converted hotel and the furniture/fittings are new. There are a couple of laundry service shops across the hotel so getting your laundry cleaned is convenient (and they can deliver to the hotel). The breakfast spread is good with both western and Asian dishes. The staff are courteous and friendly. There is free wi-fi, although connectivity from my iPhone is spotty. It has a nice courtyard where you can hang out for food and drinks and chat with your fellow hotel guests. Overall, a great hotel in a nice location and certainly great value for money. I will certainly stay here the next time I travel again to Penang.

Antique hotel full of pleasant surprises ”

unique interior design, strategic location, clean, friendly staffs, excellent food

We always came across Banana Guest House but didn't know the existing of Banana Boutique Hotel until we saw it online at Agoda.com. We thought of give it a try and the two-day stays there is obviously not enough. The room is decently big and we were given a king-size bed. The teak wood furniture decorated room is very neat and simple. We like it at the first sight when we were showed to the room. The hotel is newly renovated and there are table and chairs provided at different corners of the hotel for guests to chill out. There is also a fish pond in the middle of the hotel, which the fishes get direct sunlight and breeze from the opening from the roof top. We will definitely go back to the hotel again. The location of the hotel is good - it's located in Georgetown, there are many food hawkers in the morning and night, especially for food lovers like us.

Nice boutique hotel in the center of Georgetown”

Nice rooms, location great, breakfast

Actually I liked to Banana Boutique hotel. It's located directly in the historical and touristic center of Georgetown and everything is nearby. The rooms are decorated nicely, properly equipped and clean, the breakfast buffet is okay to start the day etc. But be careful not to step into any antique vase, table, chair etc. as every item has a price tag ("once broken, considered sold"). Visa run guests from Thailand arrive on Monday and then the Banana Boutique gets full. The Wifi had working while we were there and didn't work either when we returned two weeks later. Hint: take bus 401E from airport to KOMTAR and walk down Jl. Penan.

Very Comfortable hotel ”

Service MInd and Location

A very good and comfortable hotel with the very helpful and good service. Hotel staffs r always eager to answer all the questions the guest have no matter about the food stall, the transportation. Also The Location of Banana boutique hotel is quite convenient ,so closed to many tourist attraction esp the Blue Mansion. Most of the attractions are in a walking distance about 10-15 minutes..Even a bit far attractions like Keh Lok Si temple or Batu Ferringhi Beach can be reach by the bus which you can take from the bus stop in front of the hotel. If I have any chance to visit Penang again,I surely will stay here again..

Nice Staff, Bad Wifi”

Location, Staff

Staff was nice in person, but difficult to deal with when you call up for inquiries because they tend to cut you off with a quick response when you haven't finished your question yet (this happened repeatedly); as if they are happy and enthusiastic to help by talking, but without first listening. When you get to the hotel, however, they are very pleasant. Wifi was awful (despite having many different choices of routers you can connect to). Frequent disconnection and super slow (like 25 kbps... that's a "k" not an "M"). I don't think it's a Malaysian/Penang problem because Wifi was much better at another Penang hotel I stayed at last year (Hotel Mingood). But I'd like to say that Banana Boutique's rooms were much nicer than Mingood. Also great location and near the bus stop which takes you to great places around Penang. Do I recommend it? Yes, as long as you take these measures: 1) When inquiring with the staff over the phone, you have to be very assertive (almost rude) and insist "Excuse me, can you please listen and let me finish before answering?" 2) Buy your own mobile internet from the DIGI counter at the airport before going into town. The mobile internet is much, much, much.. and again much faster than Banana Boutique's Wifi (and then you can use your phone to emit a Wifi signal, if you have a laptop). With these measures in place, I can say that Banana Boutique hotel is a good place to stay in Penang.

Beautiful Hotel with Warm Inviting Staff”

Comfortable Rooms and Beds, Complimentary Breakfast with Stay, Nice Location

banana boutique hotel has a sister operation, the more budget-friendly hostel down the street. our cab driver was not familiar with the hotel, so we got dropped off there- not a huge deal, since it's an easy walk (100 yards?), but if you have heavy bags i suppose it would be tiresome. i found the facilities to be well-represented by the photos online, and the rooms were spacious and airy and cool. the staff was super nice and answered many of our questions that we had about travelling in/through/out of penang.

Great location, friendly staff, comfortable rooms”

Location in Georgetown, very close to shops and food with a bus stop across the road.

my stay at the banana boutique hotel was a very enjoyable one. the staff were lovely and very helpful, especially when asking about how to get to certain locations on the island. the location of the hotel is great, very central in georgetown so walking distance from many shops and food areas. there is also a handy bus stop across the road which will take you to many places on the island. to try and say something bad, the twin share room was a little cramped, but all in all, a great place to stay.

Great combination of history and comfort”

Design/decor, comfort, location

The Banana Boutique makes a stunning first impression - a beautifully refurbished Chinese building. The foyer is full of Chinese antique furniture and pictures and vases, there's a fabulous huge solid wood staircase and a fish pond under the open roof of the traditional Chinese style courtyard. The lovely decor continues inside the rooms, some with doors that would fit a giant! Super, comfortable hotel, nice big room and a decent size bathroom with a good shower. Breakfast is good - sometimes buffet, if the hotel is busy, or served at the table if it's quiet. If you pine for good expresso, visit the Rainforest Bakery and Mugshot Cafe 10 minutes wak back along Chulia.

Great Service”

Staff were excellent and good rooms

We chose this hotel after reading the reviews on Agoda, and we were not disappointed. The staff were so friendly and super helpful and were excellent with asissting us, through their Visa Service, in obtaining our new visas for Thailand. The thai conslate was unexpectedly closed (not unusual!), and as soon as they realised that we were here to get new visas, they told us the consulate was closed the next day, and put in place a plan to get our visas sorted asap. This gave us the opportunity to tour Georgetown as we had a free day. There is such a mix of cultures in Georgetown - a very interesting place! The hotel itself was great. Large room, flatscreen TV with English channels, fridge, tea/coffee making facilities, hair dryer and a well equiped bathroom. The included breakfast was simple but adequate with 2 choices. We decided to have dinner in the hotel, and we very surprised at just how good the food was. The menu is a little limited in choice but what they do cook, they cook extremely well. The Beef and Ginger dish was fantastic and the beef melted in your mouth; andthe Szechuan Lamb dish was very tasty too.

Beautiful Cosy Hotel”

Service with a smile, value for money

Located up the street from the hailed Yeng Keng Hotel, I feel that Banana Boutique Hotel is ready to give the former a run for its money. This hotel is a good hundred ringgit cheaper than Yeng Keng, but with the same quirkiness and old-time charm. The room is moderately large, with a comfy bed for a good night's sleep, and ensuite. There is a flat screen monitor with only 4 channels available, which seems quite sad. There is only one liquid soap dispenser in the bathroom, which I reckon doubles as shampoo and bath gel. I feel that this could be easily remedied by the hotel for a more comfortable stay. The staff is very accommodating and friendly. We asked for our breakfast to be packed as we were leaving early and they obligingly provided sandwiches at 6:30am. There is a private car park at the back of the hotel. Ask for directions from the staff as you have to go around the street to get to it.

Nice hotel in the center of the old town”

Location, cleaniness, friendliness

Completely renovated and new, but it still has its on traditional charm. Important: Do not mistake this hotel for the banana guest house, which is a hostel and has quite low standards. This hotel is by far better than its ratings might suggest. Breakfast does not offer a great variety. However, I have tried various boutique hotels in Penang, and they all offer below average breakfast. If breakfast is important to you go to one of the larger hotel complexes, where they offer buffets. Has no pool, but therefore its a lot cheaper then Yeng Keng next door.

Nice hotel, great location, friendly staff! ”

Peranakan style furnishing, lots of antique. runs its own travel packages, very convenient!

banana boutique is great! located on the main chulia street, closer to jalan penang, makes it very convenient for us to go to many places! there are also several buses that stop right outside the hotel, and behind the hotel. buses from these bus stops can bring you to most of the attractions in penang! the hotel has great antique furnishing in its lobby too. however, furniture in the rooms tends to be a bit old. i had some problems with the bed while i was there. other than that, the room is really clean, and the wifi provided in the hotel is really good! it has several different networks for us to connect to in case anyone fails! banana boutique also runs its own travel packages. at the hotel lobby itself you can select several day tour options that you may be interested in. mr lee, the tour guide for our day tour is very good at introducing not only the attractions in penang, but other things that you may find interesting as well. he also brought us to several other attractions that are not in the tour itinery but along the way!

Impressive century old building design with a touch of vintage. Centrally located at the penang heritage sites. Attentive staffs who are very friendly and helpful.

It was really an unforgettable great stay with the hotel! Because I was really impressed with the restoration of the century old building design of the hotel. It is like staying in an old time mansion with a touch of vintage. The hotel is well restored and it is very clean n tidy. The staffs there are very helpful and attentive. Was more than I expected and a pleasant experience”

Great location, attractive use of old building design, friendly staff

Banana Boutique was value for money - the rooms were basic but more than comfortable for two travellers who needed a good solid bed to rest and a clean bathroom to wash away the day. The hotel itself is spacious given the type of building that it is, and is designed (or may originally have been) an old-style Penang home with the wooden staircases and open air spaces in the middle. Breakfast is a mix of simple Western and Eastern fare and nothing to shout about, but the location is central to a lot of the touristy hangouts and delicious Penang food so you will have plenty of alternatives if you choose to skip breakfast. Parking is a game of luck right in front of the gates of the hotel and is right up against the street, but there is a parking lot right across from the hotel so parking difficulties aren't really a big deal if you aren't carrying a heavy load into the hotel. It was a positive experience for me and I would stay again.

Beautiful hotel with a taste of Penang”

Nicely furnished, very clean, big spacious beds, convenient location

the hotel is located conveniently in georgetown, buses to attractions such as penang hill and batu ferringhi are 5 minutes away on foot. a famous nasi kandar place and the famous red garden serving delicious food are also just 5-10 minutes away on foot. the staff members are very willing to help. if your departing flight is late in the evening, you can leave your luggage at the concierge after checking out, walk around, and come back to the hotel for a quick shower before heading off to the airport. the staff members would prepare the shower and towels for you! my only complaint: the bed wasn't very sturdy, it gave way as soon as we sat down on it! thank goodness they switched rooms for us immediately.

Beautifully renovated hotel”

Excellent service, lovely spacious rooms with high ceilings, great outside space to sit in the evenings.

The hotel has recently been renovated and they have done a fantastic job. The location is also great -- right in the centre of Georgetown, on the edge of Little India. Can't fault anything -- the staff were friendly and very helpful. For hotels in this price range it has to be one of the best in Penang.

Excellent value for money”

Internet, location, comfort

Excellent stay at banana boutique. The hotel is in a great location close to lots of restaurants and within easy access of public transport and the heritage sights. Staff at reception were very helpful with our trip to langkawi. No complaints.
